Dwight D. Eisenhower and Mamie Doud met while Mamie was visiting a friend at Fort Sam Houston and became engaged on February 14, 1916. They married on July 1, 1916, and over the following decades Mamie supported Dwight through his military career and later his presidency. The couple had two sons; their first son Doud died of scarlet fever at age three and their second son John was born in 1922 and later served as a diplomat and author. They remained married until Dwight Eisenhower's death in 1969, after which Mamie lived in retirement until her death in 1979.
