Dorothea Tanning and Max Ernst met through the New York Surrealist circle associated with gallery owner Julien Levy. They married in a double ceremony with Man Ray and Juliet P. Browner in 1946 in Beverly Hills. The couple lived in Sedona and later relocated to France in 1949, remaining married until Ernst's death in 1976. After his death, Tanning returned to New York and continued her artistic and literary career until her death in 2012.
